The focus on reading proficiency has existed as early as the 1800s, and today the decline or stagnancy of reading skills among grade school students continues to be the major topic of discussion. For many years, the findings about the science of reading remained debatable and transverse. While many research findings named the whole language approach as the most effective pedagogical approach to reading, other research findings concluded that phonics instruction was most effective. This great literacy debate carried on for many years, until the next shiny new strategy made headlines. Balanced literacy debuted as a new fascinating approach that would soon lose it's value. Today, we find ourselves watching the news and reading news articles about the recent decline in reading scores across our nation. The impact of COVID illuminated the dire need to approach the focus on reading, as well as the demand for identifying the most recent and research-based approach to improving reading achievement. A new focus on the Science of Reading gives new meaning to concepts, strategies and the pedagogical approaches to learning to read and reading to learn.
In order to improve reading for all, it is important that we understand the Science of Reading. How does the brain function when learning to read? What parts of the brain ignite the power of reading? What is the most effective and strategic approach to teaching reading? What tools and resources most align to providing explicit instruction aligned to the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading includes five key elements that are necessary for reaching proficiency in reading.
Phonemic Awareness
Phonics
